Men’s Skin: Why They Age Like Leather Sofas (And What To Do About It)
Inspired by one of many dinner-table debates with my husband, aesthetic doctor Dr Aamer Khan.
There are certain conversations that happen in every long marriage.
Who’s putting the bins out?
Why is there only one teaspoon left in the drawer?
And perhaps most importantly:
“Why do men think washing their face with the same product they use on their car is perfectly acceptable skincare?”
As someone who spends her life immersed in the world of aesthetics and wellbeing, and who happens to be married to a doctor who has spent decades helping people age well, I can confirm that men’s skincare remains one of modern life’s great mysteries.
Women will have a ten-step routine, three serums, a jade roller and a dedicated skincare fridge.
Men will proudly announce they’ve been using the same bar of soap since 1997.
Yet here’s the irony.
Men’s skin actually ages differently from women’s skin, and in some ways, they start with a few biological advantages. The problem is that they often squander them magnificently.
Let’s discuss.
Do Men Age Better Than Women?
The short answer?
Yes. And no.
Annoyingly, men generally have thicker skin than women. They also have more collagen, which gives skin structure, firmness and resilience.
For years, this means many men appear to age more slowly. Their skin often remains firmer and less lined throughout their forties and even into their fifties.
This is the part where women everywhere roll their eyes.
However, there is a catch.
While women tend to experience a more gradual ageing process, men often age like a cliff edge.
One day they look fine.
The next day they appear to have become captain of a fishing trawler in the North Sea.
When collagen loss eventually catches up, it can happen quickly and dramatically.
Why Men’s Skin Ages
At dinner one evening, I asked my husband why so many men seem surprised by ageing.
His answer was simple:
“Because most of them ignore their skin until it starts looking older.”
Fair point.
The biggest drivers of skin ageing in men are remarkably predictable.
Sun Exposure
The number one culprit.
Years of golf, gardening, driving, running, cycling or simply existing outdoors without sunscreen eventually show up on the face. UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, pigmentation, sagging and rough texture.
In aesthetics, we often say that the face remembers every sunny holiday you’ve ever forgotten.
Stress
Modern life isn’t exactly relaxing.
Work pressure, poor sleep, financial worries and constant digital overload increase cortisol levels, which can accelerate ageing and inflammation. You may not see stress overnight, but your skin certainly keeps the receipts.
Alcohol
No judgement.
But regular alcohol consumption contributes to dehydration, inflammation and dull-looking skin. Unfortunately, “just one quick pint” has a habit of becoming a skincare strategy all by itself.
Smoking
If sunscreen is your skin’s best friend, smoking is its sworn enemy.
Smoking reduces blood flow, damages collagen and accelerates wrinkle formation.
The effect is so well documented that clinicians can often identify smoking-related ageing patterns immediately.
Poor Skincare Habits
Or, in some cases, no skincare habits whatsoever.
Using shower gel on your face is not a skincare routine.
Neither is splashing water on your face and hoping for the best.
The Good News: Men’s Skin Responds Brilliantly to Change
This is where things become encouraging.
Men’s skin often responds surprisingly quickly when they start looking after it properly.
You do not need twenty products.
You do not need a bathroom shelf that resembles a chemistry laboratory.
You simply need consistency.
The Four-Step Men’s Skincare Routine That Actually Works
1. Cleanse Properly
Use a gentle facial cleanser morning and evening.
This removes excess oil, pollution and debris without damaging the skin barrier.
No, body wash does not count.
2. Use Vitamin C
A good vitamin C serum helps protect against environmental damage and supports brighter, healthier-looking skin.
Think of it as nutritional support for your face.
3. Moisturise
Hydrated skin looks healthier, smoother and younger.
This is not vanity.
It’s biology.
4. Wear SPF Every Day
Every.
Single.
Day.
Rain, shine, summer or winter.
If you only adopt one anti-ageing habit, make it sunscreen.
Future-you will be grateful.
Can Men Reverse Skin Ageing?
Let’s be realistic.
Nobody is reversing time. If they could, every aesthetic doctor would look twenty-three.
What we can do is slow visible ageing, improve skin quality and help skin function at its best.
Healthy nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management and evidence-based skincare can make a remarkable difference.
For those who want additional support, modern aesthetic treatments can also stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture, tone and firmness.
The goal is never to look different. The goal is to look like yourself on a very good day.
The Real Secret to Looking Younger
Here’s the conclusion my husband and I eventually reached over dinner.
The men who age best are rarely the ones chasing youth.
They’re the ones looking after their health.
Good sleep.
Regular exercise.
Healthy skin habits.
Stress management.
Strong relationships.
Purpose.
A sense of humour.
Those things don’t just improve how you look.
They improve how you live.
And perhaps that’s the most attractive thing of all.
So gentlemen, if you’re reading this, consider this your official intervention.
Step away from the bar of soap.
Buy a cleanser.
Wear sunscreen.
